Things I'm Thankful for on February 1st

a safe trip to Chicago for Uncle Lee's funeral.
Having the means to even GO to the funeral--thank you God, for providing for us more than what we need, so that I am able to fly back for times like this.
Uncle Lee--such an inspiration to me of being loving, supportive and how to infuse strength into the ones I love. Such a long, happy life for him and for no pain at the end. Thank you, Lord!
Coming home to a wonderful husband and a beautiful daughter.
I'm thankful for the simple love and happiness we share in our home.
I'm thankful for the jobs that Erin and I have and for gainful employment. God is good.

2010 Gratitude Journal

I have spent alot of my life striving for the next plateau or higher ground, especially this time of year during the season of New Year's Resolutions. While I think it is a very worthwhile practice to have goals and to strive for betterment, I am becoming more and more aware of how powerful gratitude is. I've had many years where my New Year's goals are the same over and over again. It always leaves me feeling in a state of wanting--of displacment and detatchment. But simply looking around at what I have already been blessed with and the mercies that are everywhere around me, suddenly I feel deeply grateful. Peaceful. Joyful. Worshipful. A study by Dr. Robert Emmons showed that out of several hundred people, the group that kept a journal of gratitude made more progress toward achieving personal goals. Really? That is incredible. So this year, instead of making all the same goals again, my 2010 goal is to make a practice of gratitude. Of really being conscious of the blessings big and small, instead of the shortcomings and failures.
